LSU football player fatally shot man who tried to rob him and teammate, report says

One of the players pulled out a gun and shot a man who attempted to rob him and his teammate, police say.

An LSU football player shot and killed an 18-year-old man who attempted to rob the player and his teammate in Scotlandville, according to WWL-TV’s partners at The New Orleans Advocate.

Baton Rouge police said two LSU football players, who were identified by sources as running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and walk-on linebacker Jared Small, were trying to sell an electronic item when suspect Kobe Johnson pulled out a weapon and demanded the two players’ belongings.

One of the players pulled out a gun and shot Johnson several times, police say. Johnson died at the scene.

According to police, he was found dead in the back seat of a truck in the 2900 block of 68th Avenue. Both Edwards-Helaire and Small were in the truck after calling 911 following the shooting. They waited at the scene.

Both players were questioned and released Saturday without arrest.

Attorneys for the players said the shooting was in self-defense.
