ATLANTA — LSU's former star point guard, Alexis Morris, who helped the team to its first national championship, has signed on with the Harlem Globetrotters.
The club announced her debut Thursday and she will officially join the team on Feb. 9. Alexis will play under the nickname "The Show" and is currently the seventh woman to sign with the team. She will tour with the Globetrotters and the Washington Generals this year, according to our partners at Nola.com.
"I’m excited to join the Harlem Globetrotters and want to thank the leadership team for giving me an opportunity to grow my personal and professional career while playing the game I love," Morris said in a news release.
According to Nola.com, the team said they believe Morris is the first player to decline offers from other professional basketball teams since "Connie Hawkins, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer, did so in the 1960s."
Last year in April, Morris was drafted as the 22nd overall pick of the WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun, but she was released a month later. Morris then took her basketball skills overseas to play on professional teams in France and Turkey, Nola.com reported.
Morris will join the Globetrotters this year on its domestic leg tour, scheduled to make five stops in Louisiana cities throughout April.
Globetrotters president Keith Dawkins said, "The Harlem Globetrotters have a storied history of signing some of the world’s most accomplished and coveted talent: Wilt Chamberlain, Connie Hawkins, ‘Curley’ Neal, Lou Dunbar, Lynette Woodard and now, Alexis Morris,".
