NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans will offer men's amateur wrestling in the 2024-25 academic year, according to school officials.

UNO Athletics, in coordination with the university's Recreation and Intramurals department, will add a club team to compete alongside other club sports, including rugby, soccer, bowling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

The addition of club wrestling will offer students an opportunity to compete against regional club teams from LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Xavier and others.

“Getting college club wrestling into metro New Orleans will really help grow the sport of wrestling in the region, which is so important to me because it taught me the values of hard work, accountability and leadership,” said Privateers alum Timmy Couvillion, who made a generous donation to create the club wrestling program.

“I applaud my alma mater, the University of New Orleans, for taking on this endeavor.”

The school will hire a head coach during the spring 2024 semester with the club expected to start competing in fall 2024, and team members will be eligible for Privateer Wrestling Club scholarships.

UNO Vice President of Athletics and Recreation Tim Duncan also commended the addition of the program, and the chance for area athletes to compete locally while earning a degree."

“I am excited about this wonderful opportunity for high school students in New Orleans, the state of Louisiana and beyond, to attend our great university and continue to compete in the sport they love,” said Duncan.

According to UNO, the admissions staff will attend high school wrestling competitions, including the Louisiana Classic in Gonzales on January 12-13.
