NEW ORLEANS — A new athletic director is set to lead Tulane's Green Wave. The university announced David Harris as the Director of Athletics on Tuesday afternoon.
Harris is a Baton Rouge native and the current athletic director at Northern Iowa. He will oversee the athletics program that includes 17 sports the university competes in.
The announcement comes 45 days after Troy Dannen, the previous athletic director left to coach the University of Washington in October after leading Tulane for almost eight years, according to our partners at Nola.com.
“Central to David’s long and deep experience in collegiate athletics administration is his passion for the success of student-athletes, the value and integrity of competition and the importance of sports in uniting and inspiring students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff and fans,” Tulane president Michael Fitts said in a release on the university's website.
Harris comes to Tulane with 17 "Coaches of the Year", 11 NCAA tournament bids and winning 20 conference championships. He holds leadership roles at the NCAA and on national committees including the NCAA’s Council Coordination Committee and Chair of the NCAA’s Women's Basketball Oversight Committee.
“At Tulane, David will oversee an incredibly talented and dedicated group of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff who have elevated our athletics program to a high point in its long and storied history. With this hire, the opportunities and potential are limitless," Fitts said.
Harris will start his role on Jan. 3 and a news conference will be held on Monday, Nov. 27 to introduce him to the university.
