METAIRIE, La. — Short Stop Poboys is a popular spot on any given day, but especially during the Saints training camp.
Owner, Russell Hendrick, says the proximity to the Saints facility helps. Hendrick said they bring in about 20 to 25% more money each day camp is being held, compared to a normal day.
“When camp starts, you know, we prepare ahead of time," Hendrick said, “We’re packed. We are busy. It’s a good time for us. It’s an exciting time actually. To listen to them talking about what they saw during the day, and then come here to eat. And they’re all excited. So, it’s going to be a sad thing for us if they’re not here.”
On Thursday, the news broke that the team may move to California for this year's training camp.
By the lunch rush, Hendrick and his customers had thoughts.
“I don’t think they should. It takes away from the fans," Saints fan, Lester Thomas, said.
“I think they ought to move to Thibodeaux at Nicholls," Saints fan, Terry Kramer, said.
The Saints would not confirm the move and said there is no finalized agreement at this time.
However, a spokesperson for the Saints said that renovations will be taking place at the training facility that would not allow them to practice.
The Saints are expected to be in California for roughly three weeks.
Last season, the Saints canceled their final practice during training camp due to an extreme heat warning.
“California is a nice place to have camp, I get it, but it’s going to be sorely missed here if they do," Hendrick said, “There’s no poboys in California. Well not many anyway.”
The Saints organization said a formal announcement will be made when the preseason schedule comes out.
"It's all dependent on dates," a spokesperson said.
