NEW ORLEANS — Highly respected and beloved sports journalist Ed Daniels has died at age 67.
The news came of his passing on Friday.
The longtime WGNO-TV sports director of more than three decades suffered a massive heart attack last month while in California to cover the start of training camp for the New Orleans Saints.
Daniels was hospitalized in Los Angeles for 11 days before being transported back to Ochsner Medical Center in Metairie on Aug. 5 where he later died due to complications from the heart attack.
He is survived by his wife Robin Daniels, five children and five grandchildren.
No word yet on funeral arrangements.
The City of New Orleans issued a statement sharing condolences.
"We are saddened to hear of the death of long-time sportscaster, Ed Daniels. Ed was a broadcast staple here in New Orleans for more than four decades, covering sports. He earned our trust and became our friend over the years as he was welcomed into our homes as an effective, reliable communicator.
He was also an accomplished journalist and earned the respect of his peers. Ed received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Press Club of New Orleans in 2014 and he is a two-time Louisiana Sportscaster Of The Year recipient from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Ed will be dearly missed. The City of New Orleans extends its condolences to his family, friends, and so many others who worked alongside him. May he rest in perfect peace."
