Original Dixie Cups singer Rosa Hawkins dies: Report

Hawkins was one of three singers who debuted in the early 60s and were best known for No. 1 hit "Chapel of Love," a song that they sang consistently into the 2000s.

NEW ORLEANS — Rosa Lee Hawkins, best known as one of the trio of singers for the Dixie Cups singing group, has died at the age of 76, according to a report on NOLA.com by music and entertainment writer Keith Spera.

The report said she died of complications after surgery last week.

Hawkins was one of three singers who debuted in the early 60s and were best known for their No. 1 hit "Chapel of Love," a song that they sang consistently well into the 2000s.

Spera's report said that Hawkins' death was confirmed by her sister and fellow Dixie Cup singer Barbara Hawkins.

The Dixie Cups debuted in the early 60s as a local answer to the popular girl groups like the Supremes but their success was short-lived even though they remained popular on local stages.
