BATON ROUGE, La. — A traffic accident involving an 18-wheeler forced a shutdown of Interstate 10 West on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge between Baton Rouge and Lafayette on Friday afternoon.
Traffic, which sat in gridlock for nearly three hours, was diverted at Mile Marker 152 (Lobdell Exit). Vehicles sat motionless for more than 14 miles while crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The 18-wheeler struck a guard rail, which could be seen dangling over the basin.
As of 5 p.m., the westbound lanes were opened and traffic once again flowing.
This is an ongoing story and will be updated once further information becomes available.
