NEW ORLEANS -- Alumni and parents of St. Augustine High School are suing a doctor who conducted a study on the school's history of corporal punishment, according to alumni officials.
The lawsuit, filed in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, targets Dr. Monica Applewhite, who was hired by the Archdiocese in 2009 to review the school's tradition of corporal punishment.
The lawsuit, according to a spokesman for The St. Augustine High School Alumni Association, Inc., argues Applewhite 'acted recklessly and caused damage to the schools' reputation.' It goes on to say her actions hindered the association's ability to raise money to support the school.
The group is also sending a letter to Archbishop Gregory Aymond requesting he disavow his conclusions drawn from Applewhite's study.
The St. Augustine High School Alumni Association, Inc. will detail specifics of the lawsuit during a 2 p.m. news conference Wednesday.
