New Orleans City Councilmember Joseph I. Giarrusso won’t seek an at-large seat in next fall’s election

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans City Councilmember Joe Giarrusso says he won’t seek an at-large seat in next fall’s election.

Giarrusso is currently in his second term as the city's District A council member. He told WWL Louisiana that he would stay on the council until his term ended but wouldn't run for an at-large seat.

"Not running is the hardest professional decision I have had to make," Giarusso said on social media. "With that said, I am incredibly excited about this new opportunity Phelps Dunbar to practice with a wonderful firm and to continue the next phase in practicing law."

He is set to join the Phelps Dunbar law firm as counsel on Jan. 1, 2025.

"I am proud of my work for city residents as a public servant on the New Orleans City Council, and I am equally enthusiastic to share my experience in this role to expand the firm's government relations practice outside of New Orleans," said Giarrusso in a release form Phelps Dunbar. "Phelps is a deeply respected firm with both a rich history in Louisiana and an innovative, forward-looking approach to client service. All of this drew me to Phelps as a return to my law firm roots in a new role.  I know we will work together effectively on existing and new matters in Louisiana and throughout the firm's footprint.”
