WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Federal Bureau of Investigations said former U.S. President and current Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was the target of "what appears to be an attempted assassination" at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Sunday.
Hours later, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R-La.) and his Republican political colleagues took to social media to express his support for the men and women protecting Trump.
"Sharon and I are praying for President Trump and his family’s continued safety," Landry posted on X (formerly known as Twitter.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) commented after just spending time with Trump at Mar-a-Lago with his wife.
"Kelly and I are departing Mar-a-Lago, where we just spent a few hours with President Trump and are thanking God for protecting him today – once again," Johnson posted on X. "No leader in American history has endured more attacks and remained so strong and resilient. He is unstoppable."
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) also took to social media to express his support for the men and women protecting Trump.
"With news reports about the threat to President Trump’s life, we can appreciate the bravery of Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel and pray for the safety of President Trump and all Americans," Cassidy also posted on X.
The incident comes just two months removed from an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Penn., that left Trump and others wounded, and one man dead.
Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, said in a post online: “I’m glad President Trump is safe. I spoke to him before the news was public and he was, amazingly, in good spirits.”
Biden and Harris were briefed and told that they would be updated on the investigation. The White House said they were “relieved” to know Trump is safe.
Harris, in a statement, also said “Violence has no place in America.”
Shortly after the incident, a suspect was apprehended in a neighboring county.
