LOUISIANA, USA — State Sen. Cleo Fields announced that he will run for Louisiana's second-majority district, created by Gov. Jeff Landry and state legislators last week.
According to our partners at Nola.com, the district runs from Field's hometown in Baton Rouge to the Red River in Shreveport. The district still "must be blessed by the U.S. District Court Judge Shelly Dick,".
The white-majority 6th Congressional District, represented by U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, a Republican, was made into a second-majority Black district by Landry and lawmakers. Now, Fields said he wants to represent the district and run for the seat.
On Facebook made a post stating he would be a candidate.
Fields could have an advantage over other potential candidates because he is well-known. He has served over 20 years in the Louisiana Senate since 1988 and in Congress for four years in the mid-1990s, our partners at Nola.com reported.
With connections to power brokers in Washington, D.C., Fields could get help to raise money for his campaign.
“I will formally announce my candidacy in the next several weeks, but I want to be clear I am a candidate,” Fields said in a statement. “My focus will remain the same as it has always been to work and fight for the people of Louisiana.”
