WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved Kenneth Polite for the appointment of the U.S. Attorney General for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Polite, an attorney from New Orleans, now must be confirmed by the Senate -- the final step in the process for the De La Salle graduate and 9th Ward native to become the next U.S. Attorney.
Sen. Mary Landrieu, who nominated Polite for the position, has called for her colleagues to confirm Polite.
'With the backing of our local community, the President and now the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Polite's qualifications are without question. I call on my colleagues to confirm Mr. Polite without delay so he can get to work for the people of the Eastern District,' Landrieu said.
'I am honored to receive the Senate Judiciary Committee's approval to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Once again, I wish to express my gratitude for President Obama's nomination and Sen. Landrieu's recommendation for this important position. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate I will serve without reservation,' Polite said.
Polite would take over from interim U.S. Attorney Dana Boente, who has run the local office since Jim Letten resigned in Dec. 2012.
