'NOLA Trash Mob' starts post-Mardi Gras catch basin cleaning

The local organization met this weekend to clear out several catch basins.

NEW ORLEANS — After the parades are over and the crowds go home, what's left is the always-astonishing amount of Mardi Gras trash around the city.

On Saturday afternoon, one group gathered to begin the Carnival recovery themselves and start to put a dent in that amount.

The 'Nola Trash Mob,' a local organization that volunteers to fight litter in the city, met to clear out several catch basins in the 2700 block of Lowerline Street.

Fr. Peter Finney with St. Rita's Catholic Church in the Marleyville/Fontainebleau neighborhood was one of the organizer of the event.

"It shows us we can't really do this by ourselves; I've cleaned out a couple catch basins with neighbors but it takes all of us pitching in together to tackle those common problems," Finney said.

"We hope those institutions like the Sewerage and Water Board will take care of [it] in a bigger way. But we can do our little part, together, by cleaning up some of these things to help with that flood prevention in some small way," Finney said.
