NEW ORLEANS Drivers, be warned. Beginning Monday, new traffic cameras will go online in the city of New Orleans, in 11 spots ranging from Uptown to Algiers and New Orleans East.
The city announced the placement of the new cameras earlier this month, at the same time it announced a higher threshold for issuing speeding tickets, as well as proposed changes to the appeals process, and a more stringent system of going after ticket scofflaws.
Officials said ten of the new cameras to be activated Monday were placed near schools and playgrounds, in an effort to increase safety in those areas.
Here are the 11 new locations:
UPTOWN/GARDEN DISTRICT:
- Eastbound Camp Street at International School of Louisiana
- Eastbound and westbound Freret Street at former Audubon Primary Academy
- Northbound and southbound Jackson Avenue at Sci Tech Academy
- Northbound and southbound Carrollton Avenue at KIPP Believe School
- Eastbound and westbound Prytania Street at Louise McGehee School
- Westbound Annunciation Street and Second Street at Clay Square Park
NEW ORLEANS EAST:
- Eastbound and westbound Dwyer Road at Miller McCoy Academy
- Eastbound and westbound Hammond Street at Resurrection of Our Lord School
ALGIERS:
- Eastbound and westbound Opelousas Avenue near Holy Name of Mary School
- Northbound and southbound Pace Boulevard at Murray Henderson Elementary
GENTILLY/PONTCHARTRAIN PARK:
- Northbound and southbound Press Drive at Coghill Elementary
Also taking effect Monday is a new threshold for speed violations. Except during school zone hours, a driver now will have to be going at least 10 mph over the speed limit to trigger the camera.
Previously, the camera was triggered when drivers went six miles over the limit. The threshold for a ticket will stay at 6 mph during school hours in school zones where cameras are posted.
