WASHINGTON, USA — The Powerball jackpot has risen once again, breaching the $900 million mark after yet another drawing with no grand prize winner.
The $925 million estimated prize for Saturday night's drawing would be the ninth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history and fourth-largest Powerball prize.
The jackpot has been rising for weeks after a streak of drawings without a grand prize winner. Lottery fever has also played a part as hours before the drawing, the big prize soared from $835 million to $850 million due to "strong ticket sales."
Although no jackpot winner was declared, four people did manage to select all five white balls correctly, netting themselves a $1 million prize. The tickets were sold in California, Kansas, Maryland and New York.
Although the game highlights the $925 million prize, that is for a winner who is paid through an annuity over 30 years. Most winners choose the cash payout option. For the next drawing Saturday night, that will be an estimated $432 million.
The last time someone hit the Powerball jackpot was back in July, when one very lucky lottery player in California won $1.08 billion, which was the game's third largest prize in history. Since then, there have been 27 straight Powerball drawings without a grand prize winner.
It's been a big summer for huge lottery prizes. Last month, a single winning ticket sold in Florida won the $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the largest in the game's history. That winner came forward recently to claim their prize.
