Young lives lost in three separate shootings

Experts say there isn’t one root cause, but accessibility to guns, poor conflict management, and social media all play a role.

NEW ORLEANS — “I’ve watched him grow up,” Pediatrician and WWL Louisiana Medical Correspondent Dr. Corey Hebert said. “I was his doctor.”

Last month, Jvoine Elow told Pediatrician and WWL Louisiana Medical Correspondent Dr. Corey Hebert he was going to have good grades on his next report card.

“When I would tell him he could be anything he wanted to be, I could tell he believed me.” Dr. Hebert said.

Dr. Hebert would never see the A’s on Elow’s report card. Elow is one of three children killed in separate shootings across the metro area since Friday.

“He had made that move to move towards trying to be the best person he could be when this tragedy happened. He had a really good family unit, but this city will eat you sometimes regardless,” Dr. Hebert said.

We asked the experts, where does youth gun violence begin?

“Social media, social media, social media,” Dr. Hebert said.

According to Tulane Social Work Associate Professor Dr. Reginald Parquet, there isn’t one root cause, but accessibility to guns, poor conflict management, and social media all play a role.

“It’s stemming from a number of places,” Tulane Social Work Associate Professor Dr. Reginald Parquet said.

Twenty-two youths died in Orleans Parish last year because of gun violence.

This year, that number dropped to five, but even one life lost is too many.

“I’m hurting beyond what you could even comprehend about this because I’ve taken care of this kid his entire life,” Hebert said.
