WWL-TV was honored with the award for Best Social Media at the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters’ annual Prestige Awards ceremony Thursday in Lafayette.

The station was honored for its social media coverage throughout 2018, including breaking news coverage, investigative coverage, severe weather and the Saints playoff race. That includes live video reports exclusive to social media, explanatory videos, breaking Twitter and Facebook posts and YouTube videos.

“Bring the news to where the people are. That’s the rule in digital newsmaking these days and WWL-TV does it from push alerts directly to people’s phones and a heavy presence on social media,” said Tom Planchet, the station’s Digital Director. Planchet accepted the award on behalf of the WWL staff Thursday.

WWL-TV’s Eyewitness Morning News chef and feature reporter Kevin Belton was also honored by the LAB. His second PBS cooking series, “Kevin Belton’s New Orleans Kitchen,” was honored with the association’s Uniquely Louisiana award. The program, produced by WYES-TV, airs on stations nationwide.

Chef Belton’s third national series, “Kevin Belton’s New Orleans Celebrations,” premieres on WYES in April and will begin airing on stations across the country as well.
