Woman sentenced for role in 2014 drowning of Reserve couple

NEW ORLEANS – A woman was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 years in prison for her role in the drownings of a Reserve couple, according to the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office.

Brittany Martin, 29 was sentenced to 10 years in state prison, with five years suspended, by Criminal District Judge Ben Willard. Martin pleaded guilty in February 2015 to obstruction of justice and as a part of a plea agreement that saw murder charges dropped in exchange for her cooperation with prosecutors.

Martin’s former boyfriend, 41-year-old Horatio Johnson, and co-defendant 32-year-old Steven Bradley, was tried separately last year for the February 2014 double-murder of Kenneth and Lakeitha Joseph.

Authorities determined the Reserve couple was beaten, bound and thrown from a bridge into the Intracoastal Waterway in New Orleans East with 30-pound kettlebell weights tied to their ankles.

Jurors convicted Johnson of the murders last August and he was sentenced to two life terms, plus 60 additional years for obstruction and conspiracy. Bradley’s jury acquitted him of the murders in December, but convicted him on obstruction and conspiracy charges.

Bradley was sentenced to 35 years. Another co-defendant, Frank Mike Jr., was sentenced to nine years after pleading guilty to obstruction and cooperating with prosecutors.
