What to expect Saturday: the Cardell Hayes trial

NEW ORLEANS -- Will Cardell Hayes take the stand today in his own defense?

That's the question on many minds as the trial of the man who killed former Saints player Will Smith on April 9 enters day six. Testimony resumes at 9:30 a.m.

The state rested its case Friday afternoon after it more than 24 hours of testimony from about 15 witnesses.

Hayes's attorneys, meanwhile, called a six witnesses in a flurry of testimony during a two-hour window Friday afternoon.

Among those witnesses was private investigator David Olasky. He testified that a woman named "Weedy" who was near the scene after shooting saw former NOPD Capt. Billy Ceravolo removed a gun from Smith's SUV after the shooting.

Surveillance video from the Windsor Court, however, showed Ceravolo at the hotel bar waiting for Smith and others when the shooting happened.

Prosecutor Jason Napoli during a cross-examination of Olasky asked him if after viewing that evidence there was any way Ceravolo might have been able to on the scene immediately after the shooting.

Olasky conceded the witness he spoke to was likely wrong.
