Watch: St. Charles Deputy pulled from overturned, burning police car

“I am thankful our officer received help quickly from the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office and will be alright,” Sheriff Champagne said.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — A tense moment was caught on video as a St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s supervisor was pulled from his police car after it overturned and caught fire in a single-vehicle crash.

The Sheriff’s Office says it happened Saturday at about 6:45 p.m. on Airline Highway in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The supervisor had just gotten off shift at the jail and was in uniform driving his marked Sheriff’s Office unit home when for an unknown reason the officer lost control of the vehicle and flipped over.

A LaPlace couple, who sent WWL-TV the video, says they were the first to pull up to the scene and with the help of other people at the scene, they were able to get the officer out of the burning car.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was released from an area hospital. He is recovering at home.

Louisiana State Police is handling the accident.

“I am thankful our officer received help quickly from the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office and will be alright,” Sheriff Champagne said.
