Former NOPD officer killed in line of duty in Arizona

Officer Adam Buckner was killed in a crash Sunday night, police said.

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Tucson Police Department held a news conference after an officer lost his life in a crash in midtown.

TPD Police Chief Chad E. Kasmar was joined by Mayor Regina Romero during the news conference at the TPD headquarters.

According to TPD, 31-years-old Adam Buckner was responding to a call Sunday night when he was involved in a crash near North Campbell Avenue and East 6th Street.

Kasmar says that Buckner was driving north on Campbell with his sirens on when a driver failed to yield the right of way while turning and caused the crash.

Community members performed CPR until members of the Tucson Fire Department responded and took over medical care according to Kasmar.

Buckner was taken to Banner University Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

The intersection was closed and traffic was diverted throughout the night but was reopened early Monday morning.

“The loss of a police officer is tragic, it is a loss shared by the family, and the members of the Tucson Police Department in particular. Yet it is one we all share. To the parents, wife, and family of Officer Buckner, you have our love and support to help you through this difficult time,” said Mayor Regina Romero.

Buckner started as an officer with the New Orleans Police Department in 2017, and then became a detective.

In November of 2021, Buckner joined the Tucson Police Department where he was known for his leadership and commitment to excellence.

TPD says Buckner was a true professional that took great pride in his work and helping others.

TPD released the following statement on Twitter/X.

TPD says no citations have been given at this time.

If you have any information on the accident, TPD requests you to call the traffic investigations unit at 520-791-4389
