NEW ORLEANS — The Krewe of Tucks, a mainstay carnival krewe since 1969, could once again toss their signature Mardi Gras throw if the New Orleans City Council agrees to amend a ban on toilet paper throws.
The Krewe of Tucks is known for throwing rolls of branded toilet paper but the comedic Krewe’s throw causes concerns as it dangles from century-old Live Oak trees and makes a sloppy mush along the Uptown parade route.
That is why in September, the New Orleans City Council voted and approved a city ordinance banning toilet paper, among other nuisance throws like mylar confetti. However, immediately after passing the ban, it was shelved by the council until 2025.
The city’s Government Affairs Committee is expected to take up the matter of whether or not to amend the ban and add an exemption allowing only the Krewe of Tucks to continue to throw toilet paper at their parades. The ban would still apply to other parade krewes.
At Wednesday's city council meeting the council agreed to hold off discussing the matter.
If the exemption were passed, Tucks would be the only Krewe allowed to throw biodegradable, single-ply toilet paper only.
If the amendment is approved by the committee it will go before the city council for approval on January 18.
