Trick-or-treaters in for a chilly surprise

Last-minute shoppers were out searching for an on-theme outfit that will also keep them warm.

NEW ORLEANS — It's nearly Halloween, and if you've based your costume around the warm weather you are in for a chilly surprise.

Last-minute shoppers were out searching for an on-theme outfit that will also keep them warm.

On All Hallow's Eve, ghosts, goblins, and ghouls come out to play, especially in Southeast Louisiana. This Halloween will likely have you shaking in your boots, not because it's spooky season, but because it will be chilly.

Travis Laurendine said, "This is when I go into my sandworm costume from Beetle Juice; it's a full zip, it's a beetle juice costume."

Some are picking out or switching up their costumes to keep their teeth from chattering. Mark Fleming told WWL-TV he picked a costume to keep warm, saying he chose a, "Gorilla costume got lots of fur very warm fellow...."

The coldest Halloween on record was back in 1993. This Halloween is not going to get that cold, but it will be unseasonably chilly, so the advice is to dress warm. You can keep warm by adding some layers or accessorizing your themed outfit with boots, hats, or scarves.

Remember, children lose heat more quickly than adults, so take some indoor breaks if they get too cold.

Parents were also picking up last-minute costumes that they hope will keep their kids warm when they are out trick-or-treating.

Kendel Bernard said her daughter, "Came up with this grand idea that she wants to be  2000 hip hop artist Soulja Boy. So that's what we're looking for today. We're trying to put a costume together."

The mother-daughter duo says it's a holiday tradition to shop for costumes together, but now they've had to alter the costume to include jackets.

Bernard said, "Every year, I look forward to it... It is something we have been doing every year. She's 14, so it's a tradition we do every year."
