Highway 20 reopens following a train derailment in St. James Parish

The derailment happened early Tuesday morning in Vacherie along Highway 20 which was closed for several hours.

ST. JAMES PARISH, La. — Train cars derailed in St. James Parish and caused traffic problems when four train cars came off the tracks and blocked a highway.

The derailment happened early Tuesday morning in Vacherie along Highway 20. State Police and DEQ workers are on the scene to ensure public safety. St. James Parish Sheriff Claude J. Louis Jr. says there was no threat to the public.   

Crews were able to clear the derailed cars and Highway 20 reopened at about 8:30 a.m.

According to a report from the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, two non-hazardous material hopper cars derailed and two hazardous material cars that were empty at the time came off their wheels.
