The Breakdown: Trump’s VP pick, J.D. Vance

Vance is passionately pro-life, except in saving the life of the mother. He has said he would vote ‘no’ to protecting interracial and same-sex marriages.

NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: a closer look at the Republican Vice Presidential pick, J.D. Vance.

Vance is a Senator from Middletown, Ohio. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022.

He is a Marine Veteran who served in Iraq and then graduated from Ohio State University and Yale University Law School. He is a successful businessman. His book “Hillbilly Elegy” became a best-seller 2016 and was turned into a movie.

But in that year, Vance said he did not vote for his own now-running-mate.

In fact, Senator Vance once called himself a “Never Trump” guy.

He said on NPR, “I can’t stomach Trump,” and once compared him to Hitler.

And in now-deleted Tweets, he’s called Trump an “idiot”, “noxious”, and “reprehensible”.

He had pulled a 180 over the next few years. And in 2020, he echoed Trump’s lies of widespread election fraud. Vance earned an endorsement from Trump in his 2022 senate race and eventually said he was ‘wrong’ about Trump.

On the issues, he reflects Trump in many ways. Vance is passionately pro-life, except in saving the life of the mother.  He has said he would vote ‘no’ to protecting interracial and same-sex marriages.

Vance told a Catholic magazine in 2021 he would like to ban pornography.

And has said diversity and inclusion programs are racist and should be outlawed.

Just this weekend, Vance faced backlash after a post blaming the Biden campaign’s rhetoric for the assassination attempt on Trump instead of urging unity or condemning political violence.

Vance will debate Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris sometime in just the next few weeks.
