NEW ORLEANS — In your Ballot Box Breakdown: If you’re feeling stressed out about the presidential election, a recent psychological survey shows you’re far from alone.
The American Psychological Association’s latest Stress in America Poll says 77 percent of people report that the future of our nation is a significant stressor in their lives, along with 69 percent stressed about the Presidential Election, and 73 percent stressed about the economy.
More than 72 percent were worried the election results could lead to violence. And 56 percent of adults worry the 2024 presidential election could be the end of democracy in the U.S.
In general, the survey shows presidential election stress is up from 2020 and significantly higher than in 2016.
If all of this is making your anxiety worse, let’s turn this story around! It’s not all bad news.
About 60 percent of those surveyed are feeling hopeful about this election and the same number are hopeful that it will lead to a more inclusive society.
If you’re feeling more stressed than hopeful, remember it’s okay to take a break from the news and social media. Election day is less than two weeks away.
