NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: a closer look at President Joe Biden’s planned trip to New Orleans Tuesday.
First: why is he coming?
Biden will be here on an effort for Biden Cancer Moonshot. The ambitious goal of the initiative is to cut the death rate of cancer in half by 2047.
Biden aims to launch new programs and policies, and fund non-profits and academic institutions that will expand access to cancer screenings, prevent cancers, and innovate on the cancer-care front.
Why New Orleans?
Louisiana has the fifth highest cancer mortality rate in the country and is home to ‘Cancer Alley’. That’s where a high concentration of industrial plants also shows a high rate of cancer.
Louisiana is also home to some incredible research institutions. Last spring, the Bidens toured the Louisiana Cancer Research Center on Tulane Avenue as part of Moonshot.
What should you expect Tuesday?
The exact details of Biden’s visit won’t be made public until early Tuesday morning, but you should be aware of some potential traffic issues.
Biden will be landing at MSY in the early afternoon, so there will be increased security on I-10 and some potential street closures for his motorcade in the City of New Orleans.
