The Breakdown: New Orleans City Council okays emergency contract amid trash troubles

Now, with just weeks until the New Year, the Sugar Bowl, and Mardi Gras, city council’s emergency declaration throws the sanitation department a life raft.

NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown, there are trash troubles in downtown New Orleans.

The New Orleans city Council has declared a public emergency with just eight days until there is no longer a contracted trash service in the CBD and French Quarter.

The contract with the current trash and street cleaning company, Kellermeyer Bergensons Services, LLC,  ends Dec. 23. However, the company says it will need more money from the city to sign another contract due to rising costs.

The council’s emergency declaration would open the door for a 500-thousand dollar bump for the company and enter into a 4.4 million dollar emergency contract.

Why is this happening? That’s unclear.

KBS apparently told the city back in July that it was going to need more money, but the city’s Sanitation Department waited until just recently to collect bids for the job.

Now, with just weeks until the New Year, the Sugar Bowl, and Mardi Gras, city council’s emergency declaration throws the sanitation department a life raft; hopefully securing KBS for another year.
