The Breakdown: Is your voter registration up to date and active?

Here's how you can check.

NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: how to make sure you’re ready to vote, and not on the inactive list.

Many people out there don’t know they’re on Louisiana’s inactive voter list. Inactive voters are people whose address was not able to be verified either through a canvass or a confirmation mail to your address that came back undeliverable.

You can check if you’re on the inactive list by going to the Secretary of State’s voter portal and typing in your name.

If you’re on the list, you can update your address and you’re good to go. But, by Louisiana law, inactive voters can still vote on Election Day.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, if you haven’t changed your address - or you moved to an address within the same precinct - you can bring your ID and fill out a voter confirmation card.

If you haven’t confirmed your address and haven’t voted in the last two federal elections, you may no longer even be registered. You can check that status on the Voter Registration Portal with the Secretary of State’s Office.

There are only a few days left to register to vote, and you have to do it online by Tuesday, October 15th.
