NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown, we’re about halfway through 2024, and we’re looking at crime rates.
NOPD released its preliminary crime statistics for June, and they show that compared to this time last year, there’s been a 27-percent decrease in violent crime.
Homicides are down 40 percent year-to-date compared to 2023, and armed robberies are down 52 percent.
Data from the Metro Crime Commission yielded similar numbers; showing a 45-percent decrease in homicide since this time last year and a 42-percent decrease in armed robberies.
This reflects a notable decrease in violent crime in some cities nationwide.
This data is infamously difficult to analyze because not all law enforcement agencies submit data to the FBI every year, and some data is underreported or incomplete. Still, the FBI reports that homicides are on the decline.
This will be a factor in the election this year. In a survey taken by the Pew Research Center 58 percent of Americans say reducing crime should be a top priority.
And here in New Orleans, despite some recent high-profile violent crimes, 2024 is shaping up to be a less violent year.
