The Breakdown: Amid St. Tammany gun controversy, where can’t you carry in Louisiana?

There’s a long list specifically outlined in Louisiana law.

NEW ORLEANS —  In your Breakdown: after St. Tammany Parish Council member David Cougle illegally brought a gun into a council meeting, we’re talking about where you can and can’t carry a handgun in Louisiana.

There’s a long list specifically outlined in Louisiana law.

It includes law enforcement offices, courthouses, polling places, places of worship, parades, bars, schools, and municipal buildings, such as those in St. Tammany Parish.

Just last month, Louisiana lawmakers voted to relax some gun laws in the state, allowing law-abiding people over 18 to carry a gun without a permit.

But even that law - which is effective July 4 - still bans guns in all the places previously mentioned, including government-owned buildings, bars, and parades.

Plus, there’s now legislation up for discussion that would make the French Quarter, downtown, and convention center in New Orleans gun-free zones.

While no charges have been filed in the St. Tammany instance, current Louisiana law says anyone who illegally brings a gun into a restricted area could face a fine of $500 or six months of jail time.
