The Breakdown: St. Tammany Council pushes to prioritize US-90 bridge repairs

In your Breakdown: after two years, the St. Tammany Parish Council has run out of patience for bridge replacements on US-90.

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — We’re talking about the chunk of US-90 which connects Louisiana and Mississippi, south of I-10. The whole stretch of road has been closed since May of 2022 because the four historic bridges built nearly a century ago have deteriorated.

They include the West Pearl Bridge, West Middle Pearl Bridge, Middle Middle Pearl Bridge, and East Middle Pearl Bridge.

The closure of this stretch of road has not only been devastating for businesses on either side, but it has really slowed down work commutes and squeezed traffic on I-10.

Now, the St. Tammany Council has passed a resolution that urges state and federal leaders to expedite removing and replacing them, and officially name that section of US 90 as an alternate hurricane evacuation route.

The process has been stalled because the Department of Transportation says it could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Back in August, the DOTD even offered up the bridges for their salvage value to anyone who wanted to remove them and put them elsewhere.

But it seems the parish council is tired of waiting for someone to take that offer, and wants the foot on the gas to re-open US-90.
