DSNAP and SNAP replacements authorized after Hurricane Francine

People in eight parishes who lost groceries due to Hurricane Francine can now get some help refilling their refrigerators.

NEW ORLEANS — Friday, the federal government approved the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services’ request for disaster food assistance in eight parishes.

People in Ascension, Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John, St. Mary, and Terrebonne parishes are now eligible for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP). DSNAP is not for families who are enrolled in SNAP, it is to benefit non-SNAP families who need assistance due to loss of power or other damage to their home.

Residents of the 8 approved parishes should apply for DSNAP by phone on their assigned day by last name. The phone number is 1-888-LAHELPU (1-888-524-3578).

  • Day 1 (Wednesday, Sept. 25) –A-G
  • Day 2 (Thursday, Sept. 26) – H-M
  • Day 3 (Friday, Sept. 27) – N-Z
  • Day 4 (Monday, Sept. 30) – Open to all
  • Day 5 (Tuesday, Oct. 1) – Open to all

DCFS says current SNAP recipients in Assumption, Lafourche, St. Mary, and Terrebonne parishes will automatically receive a replacement of 40 percent of their September benefits, if they were issued on or before Francine made landfall on September 11th. 

Other SNAP recipients in 16 other parishes who lost food due to power outages of 24-hours or more can apply for replacements by September 30th. The form to submit is here.
