Could New Orleans join communities banning Mylar balloons?

In your Breakdown: There's been talk about whether New Orleans would or could ban Mylar balloons, it wouldn't be the first community to settle hang-ups with helium.

NEW ORLEANS — As of July 1st, it's illegal in all of Florida for people to intentionally release any kind of balloon, as the tiny pieces can travel hundreds of miles.

Hawaii made the move to protect ocean life and birds in 2023. Maine considers it a violation of the litter law.

New Hampshire considers it a violation of fire code.

The City of Las Vegas also cited power lines and dozens of outages when it passed an ordinance making it illegal to release any balloons. Plenty of smaller municipalities – especially beach towns – have similar ordinances on the books.

By 2031, Mylar balloons will be totally illegal in the whole state of California.

Lawmakers cited the risk of causing power outages and wildfires and are encouraging manufacturers to create metallic balloons that don't conduct electricity.

The fines in all of these places for violations go up to 500 dollars.
