The Breakdown: New Orleans dramatic crime decrease reflects national trend

In your Breakdown: violent crime in New Orleans has dropped dramatically this year. And it’s reflecting a national trend.

NEW ORLEANS — The City Council Crime Dashboard shows that in New Orleans:

  • Fatal shootings are down 41.4%
  • Non-fatal shootings are down 42.3%
  • Car jackings are down 45.6%
  • Armed robberies are down 41.9%

If it sounds too good to be correct, crime analyst Jeff Asher reports that murder rates nationwide are currently dropping at the fastest rate ever officially recorded.

Based on data from 277 cities, AH Datalytics shows murder is down more than 17-percent from this time last year.

Earlier this summer, preliminary FBI data showed violent crime nationally is down about 15-percent, and murder is down more than 26-percent. It is worth noting, FBI crime reports do not get data from every law enforcement agency in the country.

Even though crime has dramatically decreased, our perception hasn’t changed much.

A Gallup poll shows that more than half of Americans believe there is more crime in their local area than there was last year. About 77-percent believe there is more crime in the United States than there was a year ago.

So while the numbers are changing nationwide - and in New Orleans - it may take longer to really change the narrative.
