LOUISIANA, USA — In your Breakdown: all four constitutional amendments on this weekend’s ballot passed.
Amendment 1:
53% YES
47% NO
Amendment 1 passed with the most narrow margin. It adds an element of politics to how judges may be disciplined in the state. It increases the Louisiana Judiciary Commission from nine members to 14, and those five new members will be appointed by politicians. The amendment also grants some more disciplinary power to the Louisiana Supreme Court.
Amendment 2:
66% YES
34% NO
Amendment 3:
58% YES
42% NO
Amendments 2 and 3 went hand in hand, requiring the legislature to wait 48 hours before a final vote on a bill dealing with money, and now, allowing the legislature to extend their own deadline up to six days to get those bills passed.
Amendment 4:
55% YES
45% NO
Amendment 4 implements a new way of dealing with delinquent property taxes in Louisiana. Instead of the ‘sheriff’s sale’ system that Louisiana currently has, it will implement a tax lien auction process, which will allow property owners to pay off their debt more like a mortgage.
There will be more constitutional amendments on the Mar. 29 ballot from last month’s special session on taxes.
