The Breakdown: LDH launches heat-related illness dashboard

In your Breakdown: more than 175 people from Southeast Louisiana have ended up in the emergency room with heat-related illnesses in 2024.

LOUISIANA, USA — So far, the dashboard finds that Saturday afternoon is the most common time for these patients to show up at the ER. Most patients are men between the ages of 30 and 49.

Statewide, the worst day so far was Saturday, June 15, when the temperature tied a record at 97 degrees.  The heat index was around 106 degrees in the New Orleans area.

Just this past Saturday, 43 people went to the emergency room after overheating. Four of them were in Southeast Louisiana.

In total, our region made up about 16 percent of statewide visits to the ER for heat-related illnesses in 2024.

The page also includes tips on how to avoid heat-related illness. Stay in air-conditioned spaces, stay hydrated, wear a wide-brimmed hat and loose, lightweight clothing, check your medications, and never leave children or pets alone in vehicles.

As the thermometer rises outside, it’s a good reminder to take inventory of your temperature, too. The Department of Health says fainting, nausea, dizziness, and headaches are all signs you’ve gotten too hot.
