What to expect this week as lawmakers re-write Louisiana’s tax code

The session must end by November 25th, meaning there are just five days to get things done.

NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: The special session to rewrite Louisiana’s Tax Code continues, and it’s about to be a big week.

The session must end by November 25th, meaning there are just five days to get things done.

Tuesday, the Senate will debate House Bill 9 - that’s the bill you’ve probably heard of, which would implement sales taxes for the first time on dozens of items and services.

The author, Senator Neil Riser, has proposed cutting that list of new taxes in half, but that would leave a financial gap to fill. Lawmakers may propose a solution on Tuesday.

The Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee will take a look at up to eight bills Tuesday. They include:

HB1, which lowers state income tax; HB2, which lowers taxes for corporations and eliminates some exemptions like film tax credits; HB3, which eliminates some tax breaks; HB8, which taxes digital products like streaming services; and HB10, which repeals tax a long list of tax exemptions, including on diapers and feminine products.

That’s a lot to go through, and it’s possible some amendments could be introduced.

The full Senate and the House must agree to the final bills before they can be sent to the Governor’s desk.
