LOUISIANA, USA — Amendment 2 reads, “Do you support an amendment to require that the legislature wait for at least forty-eight hours prior to concurring in a conference committee report or amendments to a bill appropriating money?”
We have all seen Louisiana lawmakers in the House and Senate, rushing to pass billions of dollars worth of budget and financial legislation at the 11th hour.
Those bills are central to how your tax dollars are spent. Lawmakers admit, in the sprint to taking a final vote, they’re not always sure what’s exactly in them.
A vote yes on Amendment 2: Means when a final version of an appropriations bill comes out of the conference committee or the Senate, every lawmaker must get a summary of any changes made. Then they must wait 48 hours before taking a final vote.
A vote no would mean things stay as-is, and lawmakers can vote on appropriations bills at any time, with no waiting period.
