The Breakdown: Fact checking VP Kamala Harris’ DNC acceptance speech

In your Breakdown: just as we did with the RNC, we’re fact checking Vice President Kamala Harris’ speech as she accepted the Democratic Presidential Nomination.

CHICAGO —  Harris touched on her personal story, as well as relationships with foreign countries, the economy, and reproductive freedoms. And she dug into Trump on policy.

“As a part of his agenda, he and his allies would: Limit access to birth control, Ban medication abortion, And enact a nation-wide abortion ban with or without Congress. And - get this - he plans to create a National Anti-Abortion Coordinator,” Harris said in her speech.

But these claims about Trump’s agenda on reproductive rights are mostly false.

Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier this year that he would never advocate for restrictions on birth control and has said he would not sign a national abortion ban.

When it comes to the “national anti-abortion coordinate claim,” Harris is referring to Project 2025, which Trump has tried to distance himself from.

That document calls for extreme limits on abortion and the implementation of a "pro-life politically appointed Senior Coordinator of the Office of Women, Children, and Families."

Harris also claimed this:

“… he intends to enact what, in effect, is a national sales tax - call it, a Trump tax - that would raise prices on middle-class families by almost 4 thousand dollars a year.”

This claim is a bit exaggerated.

Trump has said he wants a 10-percent tariff on all non-American goods sold in the U.S,  and that cost would likely be passed to consumers.

But economists estimate that cost to families would range from $1700-$2300 each year.
