NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown, we’re taking a look at where hungry kids can get a meal this summer.
More than one in four kids in Louisiana live in poverty. And about 600-thousand hungry, growing children live in homes struggling to afford groceries.
The USDA has released its map for feeding sites for kids. There are many across the New Orleans metro, but sites get more sparse in the river and bayou parishes. Many of those sites are at schools where kids can eat on-site.
Second Harvest Food Bank says it’s trying to double the number of kids it feeds each day. Second Harvest has a map of its own for feeding locations available now.
And the Louisiana Legislature overwhelmingly overrode Governor Jeff Landry’s decision to decline more than 70 million federal dollars to feed hungry kids this summer.
SNAP families and some other eligible families will get a one-time 120-dollar ‘SUN Bucks’ payment sometime in June, which will help buy groceries when kids are out of school.
If you need additional help, there are Community Fridges, several food pantries, and non-profits that host warm meals.
Second Harvest Food Bank also says it needs double the number of volunteers as a typical summer and is desperate for help. You can learn more information about volunteering and the shifts they offer.
