NEW ORLEANS — In your Breakdown: Governor Jeff Landry wants a constitutional convention. But do his constituents want one?
A new poll by our partners at the Times-Picayune New Orleans Advocate shows it’s not a top priority for most voters.
Only one percent said a new constitution should be among Landry’s big goals, after the paper surveyed 800 scientifically-selected, random voters of both parties across Louisiana.
The poll reveals that overall, 27% of voters approve his handling of the writing of a new constitution, while 29% disapprove.
Here’s what’s been happening: Governor Jeff Landry is pushing hard to rewrite the state constitution in just two weeks. He hasn’t said what he wants to change or what’s off-limits. And HB800, as written, wouldn’t allow voters to elect the delegates.
It’s got many lawmakers concerned - even some Republicans, who believe the timeline is too short.
The house is expected to come up for debate and final passage on Tuesday. It would then have to pass through the Senate committee and the full senate before May 20th.
