NEW ORLEANS — Here's something to be thankful for — your grocery bills this Thanksgiving could be the lowest it's been in years.
Prices on some household staples — like soft drinks, bacon, bread, cheddar cheese, and milk have leveled off. And more importantly, the cost of turkey is way down.
A whole bird is $1.40 per pound — that's 16% less than last year and the lowest it's been in five years.
One way to save is to buy private label store brands, local grocers often have better deals. Make sure to visit each grocer's website, most of them have the prices for each product listed online.
So you can compare it with other stores before you go shopping. When it comes to side dishes, consider whether it's cheaper to make the food rather than buying it.
You can also save money by getting a free turkey at the Central City Senior Center. That giveaway is on Monday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. and it's first come, first serve.
Also on Monday, the Abundant Life Tabernacle Full Gospel Baptist Church is giving away 1,000 turkeys from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
If you are walking, you're asked to line up in front of the church on Franklin Avenue. The drive-thru line will run on North Derbigny Street.
