Celebrate Thanksgiving: Family-friendly events happening in New Orleans

As families come together this Thanksgiving, a variety of events are happening across the area for everyone to enjoy.

NEW ORLEANS — As families come together this Thanksgiving, a variety of events are happening across the area for everyone to enjoy.

2024 Bayou Classic 

Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, starting at 3 p.m.

Enjoy the sounds of the Grambling Marching Tigers and the Southern Human Jukebox as they parade from the Superdome to the French Market. The parade will also feature floats, alumni groups, military units and the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club.

100th Annual Thanksgiving Classic

Doors open at 11 a.m., post time begins at noon.

Visit the Fairgrounds to watch a derby that will kick off the racing season. Dress up in your best, either a hat or fascinator and watch the races. The event is free. ClubHouse general admission is $20 (plus tax and fees).

Limited seating is available, reservations are required.

5th Annual Human Horse Races in Mid-City

Easton Park, 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Human Horse Races is a fundraiser where people dress up as horse and race each other to raise money for local animal shelters. The event features live music and prizes for winners. 

Admission is $15 at the door. Kids 12 and under are free.

New Orleans Athletic Club's 117th Turkey Day Race

City Park, Tad Gormley Stadium

Work off Thanksgiving calories at the NOAC Turkey Day Race, which is a fundraiser for Spina Bifida of Louisiana. There will be multiple races including a 5-mile and a kids' half-mile run. All registered participants will receive a sweet potato pie from Hubig's.

  • 7:00 AM - Race Day Registration & Packet Pickup Opens
  • 8:00 AM - Kids Half Mile Race Begins
  • 8:30 AM - 5 Mile Run / Walk Begins

Free Gardens Day: Thanksgiving

Longue Vue House and Gardens, 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Celebrate Thanksgiving by enjoying beautiful lush gardens. Admission is free for Louisiana residents all day.
