ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — The St. Tammany Parish Public School Board had a big item on their agenda tonight. The board held a vote to terminate the collective bargaining agreement with the school’s teacher and employee union.
“So it's basically the management rights and the contractual obligations,” Jabbia said. “Over the years, the state and legislature have adjusted very a lot of laws, a lot of regulations have been addressed, and those have never been addressed before. Those have never been, you know, actually taking a deep dive into the CBA and redone.”
“I'd like to let all the staff, teachers, employees, let them know that we're all committed to giving them the best possible work environment and so that we can provide our students and children of the parish the best possible education,” Brandon Harrell School Board Member said.
St. Tammany Federation of Teachers and School Employees President Brant Osborn says they have already agreed to negotiate a new CBA, they just don’t want a termination date.
“This is a motion that I feel is with ill intent,” Osborn said. “It is not for the best interests of the teachers. Why would they want to have their due process rights threatened?”
The board passed the motion to terminate the current CBA with a 9-5 majority. The current CBA will be in place through June 2024 and negotiations will take place over the next seven months.
