ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. -- A New Orleans man is dead after troopers said a driver failed to move over, hitting the man and his tow truck and causing a four-car wreck.
Louisiana State Police Troop B said the fatal crash happened on I-55 north at mile post 11.8, shortly before 11 a.m. March 2.
Macy Lee Alvey III, 34, died in the wreck.
According to state police, the initial investigation showed that a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 53-year-old Kevin Brown of New Orleans was disabled on the shoulder of I-55 north. Alvey's tow truck was parked in front of the Silverado, giving assistance.
That's when troopers said a 2012 Nissan Rogue, driven by 48-year-old Kimelah Hall of Norco, was traveling in the right lane and sideswiped the Chevrolet and tow truck. Alvey was standing on the driver’s side of the tow truck and was hit by the Nissan. The Nissan then hit the right guardrail and overturned once, landing across both lanes of the highway. It was then hit by a 2008 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by 59-year-old Nina Kincaid of Hammond, in the left lane, troopers said.
Alvey was pronounced dead at the scene. Kincaid and Hall were taken to North Oaks Hospital. Kincaid suffered critical injuries and Hall suffered moderate injuries. Troopers said Kevin Brown was not injured.
Troopers said impairment is suspected on the part of Hall. A blood sample was obtained and a toxicology test will be performed by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Hall has been charged with vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle, careless operation and suspended driver’s license.
Troopers said once Hall is released from the hospital, she will be booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Jail.
