Guilty verdict in crash that killed deputy

ST. CHARLES PARISH – The man accused of hitting and killing a St. Charles Parish deputy in a four-vehicle crash was found guilty of negligent homicide Thursday.

A St. Charles Parish jury convicted Dallas Veillon of the charge following a three-day trial.

His blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit at the time of the crash, according to expert witnesses who testified.

The crash happened when Deputy Jeff Watson was responding to a call for assistance from another officer on Aug. 4 2013.

Veillon crossed the path of Watson’s unit, which had its lights on, forcing the police vehicle into oncoming traffic and resulting in a four-vehicle accident.

Watson later died at a hospital.

Sentencing for Veillon is set for Nov. 23. He faces up to five years in prison.
