WASHINGTON — St. Bernard Parish is set to get financial assistance for flood mitigation thanks to nearly $15 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency

On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) announced the parish will receive $14,844,923.25 from FEMA for Phase III of the Lake Lery Marsh Creation and Rim Restoration Project.

According to Cassidy, the federal funding will establish a lake rim along the northern perimeter of the project area and restore 401.2 acres of broken marsh to protect against future flooding events.

“Hurricanes and natural disasters are a part of life for our coastal communities, but flooding doesn’t have to be,” said Cassidy. “This funding will reduce the risk of floods for St. Bernard Parish and help families prepare for the future.”
