Free rides for St. Bernard Parish residents during holidays to curb drunk driving

The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office is once again offering free rides home to parish residents who have had a little too much to drinks.

CHALMETTE, La. — The St. Bernard Sheriff's Office is once again offering parish residents a free ride home should they consume too much alcohol to drive during the holidays.

Starting on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov. 28,), deputies will provide a free, safe ride home – "no questions asked."

The annual 'Holiday Ride Home Program' began in 1986 to help residents celebrate the holidays safely and curb often deadly drunk driving.

This program could save your life or the life of someone else,” said Sheriff James Pohlmann of the service that helps approximately two dozen residents get home safely each year. “If you’re impaired, don’t risk driving - call us instead.”

For those living outside the parish, deputies bring those residents to a sheriff’s substation where a friend or family member can pick them up.

According to the SBSO, deputies will not transport residents to bars, nightclubs or other parties.

The program runs from Thanksgiving through Jan. 2.

For those interested in using the free ride program, call (504) 271-2501.
